About this area

Haigh Woodland Park is one of Wigan's most treasured natural spaces — 250 acres of mature woodland, open parkland and formal gardens centred on the Grade II listed Haigh Hall, currently undergoing restoration. The park has been publicly owned since 1947 and offers miles of well-surfaced walking and cycling trails, a miniature railway, crazy golf, Go Ape high ropes and a duck pond, making it a natural destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts well beyond market days.

On site, the Kitchen Courtyard is home to a cluster of independent food and drink outlets including the Haigh Kitchen Courtyard café and Forsters Farm Shop — an on-site butcher and farm shop selling organic meat and artisan produce. Both are open daily 10am to 4pm and well worth a visit before or after the market.

Haigh Hall and the surrounding plantations have a rich history stretching back to 1295, with connections to Wigan's coal mining and iron production heritage. The plantations — primarily beech, oak and horse chestnut — were laid out in the 1860s to restore land damaged by mining, providing employment during the cotton famine of the American Civil War.

The park sits within easy reach of both the M6 (junction 27) and M61 (junction 6), making it accessible from across Greater Manchester and Lancashire. Wigan town centre is a short drive, with its own independent market heritage, Leeds & Liverpool Canal walks and the Museum of Wigan Life.

A 15-inch gauge miniature steam railway running a one-mile circuit through the grounds of Haigh Woodland Park. Open Sundays 11am to 4pm — which conveniently coincides with market day. A firm favourite with younger visitors and railway enthusiasts alike. Note it can be a 25-minute walk from the main car park so factor in extra time.

“Lots of posts about this reopening and the hours and the fact you “should not miss it!” when you visit the park and yet when you get to the park it’s a 25 minutes walk from the car park (longer if you’re with a toddler) and it’s not running, there’s no one around and no one has bother...”

“Bought a couple of meat and potatoes pies not sure why they are called that ? Because more potatoes and carrots no sign of any meat , pretty tasteless really .”

An on-site butcher and farm shop at Haigh Woodland Park selling organic and grass-fed meat direct from the farm alongside artisan condiments and locally sourced produce. Open daily 10am to 4pm — the sausages and rump steaks come highly recommended and make for a great post-market treat to take home.

“We always consider these to produce the best sausage we've had, the regular (plain) pork sausage are just unbeatable. Whatever you do please don't change it. Today we decided to have some rump steaks and by god were they worth it, possibly the most tender and most flavour we have ever had in a ru...”
