About this area

Tarporley is a village in Cheshire West, situated on the Cheshire Plain between Chester and Nantwich. It is consistently regarded as one of the most attractive villages in Cheshire, with a High Street of Georgian and Victorian buildings that includes a fine collection of independent shops, restaurants, pubs and specialist businesses. The Swan Hotel — an eighteenth-century coaching inn at the centre of the village — has been a social hub of the Cheshire community for over 250 years.

The village has traditionally served as a focal point for the Cheshire rural community and retains a distinctly county character. The surrounding countryside is typical Cheshire lowland — gentle farmland, hedgerows, small copses and the sandstone ridge that rises to the south and east along the Sandstone Trail. Beeston Castle — a dramatic thirteenth-century fortress with views across eight counties — is about four miles from Tarporley.

Delamere Forest, the largest area of woodland in Cheshire, is accessible to the north. Tarporley is best reached by car, with Chester about twelve miles to the north-west and Nantwich about eight miles to the south-east. The A51 provides the main road connection to both.
