First Street Makers Market

Located in Manchester.

First Street Makers Market takes place at First Street — the modern mixed-use development in the heart of Manchester's Corridor, adjacent to the HOME arts centre. It's a market with an energetic, urban character shaped by its surroundings: the arts venue next door, the canal on one side and a neighbourhood that attracts a creative, culturally-engaged crowd throughout the week.

Expect handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, textiles, homeware, gifts and art alongside artisan food and drink — local bakers, street food traders, speciality drinks and small-batch produce from makers across Greater Manchester and beyond. Live music runs through the day, which in this setting feels both natural and appropriate — First Street is a place built for people to gather and enjoy things.

Free to attend and positioned between Manchester city centre, the University district and the Deansgate waterfront, First Street Makers Market is one of the most centrally located events in the programme. Walk from Deansgate or Oxford Road stations — and consider combining it with a film, exhibition or performance at HOME.

A neighbourhood café on Jack Rosenthal Street with three Manchester locations and a loyal following since the 1990s. Known for excellent espresso, halal breakfasts, Turkish eggs on sourdough, spit roast lamb pittas and mezze platters. A proper independent alternative to the chains.

“The Capaccino was absolutely delicious. Nice creamy coffee. The food looked lovely but I didnt have any myself so I just took a picture of the cakes. Would highly recommend coming here instead of the usual basic US giant coffee brand around the corner (we all know lets be honest!) The barista was...”

“Nice modern bar. Great selection of beers. Working brewery in operation. Shuffle board and darts were great fun. About this area

First Street is a major mixed-use development in the Corridor Manchester area, located at the southern edge of Manchester city centre between Deansgate and the Oxford Road academic corridor. The development centres on the HOME arts centre — Manchester's principal venue for contemporary theatre, art, film and music — and includes residential, commercial and office space.

The wider area in which First Street sits is one of the most culturally dense in the UK outside London. The Oxford Road corridor connects the city centre to the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester Museum, the Whitworth Art Gallery and the Royal Northern College of Music within a single mile. The area's population of students, academics, artists and creative workers gives it a particular energy.

First Street is within walking distance of both Deansgate and Manchester Oxford Road railway stations, and is served by Metrolink via St Peter's Square. The Rochdale Canal towpath provides a pleasant walking and cycling route linking the area to Castlefield and the Northern Quarter. The development sits adjacent to the Gay Village and the Deansgate canal basin, both of which have strong independent food and drink scenes.

One of Manchester's great free museums, occupying the original Liverpool Road railway station — the oldest surviving passenger station in the world. Sprawling across several buildings, it tells the story of Manchester's industrial and scientific heritage through hands-on exhibits, working textile machinery, historic locomotives and a purpose-built exploration space for younger visitors. Open daily 10am–5pm.

“We had a great family visit! Perfect for a train/engineer enthusiast. Lots for children to interact and engage with. Free entry, donations accepted. If you spend over £10 in the shop you get 20% off in the cafe, wish I knew before buying lunch in the cafe! Great food and drinks though.”
