Carsington Water Makers Market

Located in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Carsington Water Makers Market takes place at Carsington Water — a 750-acre reservoir in the Derbyshire Dales that doubles as one of the Peak District fringe's most popular outdoor visitor destinations. Bringing a curated artisan market to this exceptional lakeside setting gives the event a character quite unlike any of The Makers Market's town centre locations — peaceful, scenic and completely unhurried, with views across the water and the Derbyshire hills in every direction.

The market brings together local artisan makers selling handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, art, gifts, homeware and clothing alongside artisan food and drink producers — bakers, preserves, speciality drinks and local produce that complement the outdoor, countryside feel of the venue perfectly. Live music adds warmth and energy to the event, making it feel like a genuine occasion rather than just a market visit.

Free to attend and set within the Carsington Water visitor complex — which also includes a watersports centre, cafe, cycle hire and walking trails around the reservoir — the market is easily combined with a full day outdoors in the Derbyshire Dales. It's one of the most relaxing and scenically rewarding events in The Makers Market programme.

A beautiful older-worldly pub with big outdoor space. Open from 11:45am daily.

“Excellent, friendly. We went on a busy lunch time but servers and food prep time were all good. Lots of dogs in the pub, which you’d expect (!) and our dog didn’t have loads of room to tuck into, but space was made and just a really present atmosphere all round. Food was good, not sensational...”

About this area

Carsington Water is a reservoir in the Derbyshire Dales, situated between the villages of Carsington and Hognaston near Ashbourne in the southern Peak District fringe. Opened in 1992, it is Severn Trent's largest reservoir and covers 750 acres, with a full perimeter walking route of approximately eight miles that offers outstanding views across the Derbyshire landscape. The reservoir attracts over a million visitors a year and is one of the most popular destinations in the East Midlands.

The visitor centre complex on the western shore includes a cafe, watersports and sailing centre, cycle hire, a wildlife hide and a nature reserve along the water's edge. The surrounding countryside is typical of the southern Peak District fringe — rolling limestone and gritstone hills, dry stone walls and quiet rural lanes connecting a string of attractive Derbyshire villages.

Carsington Water is most easily reached by car from Ashbourne, about four miles to the south. Ashbourne itself — sometimes described as the gateway to the Peak District — is a pleasant market town with good independent shops and the Tissington Trail cycling and walking route passing nearby. The A515 connects the area northward into the heart of the Peak District National Park.

“A beautiful walk and place. Filled with nature and beautiful sights. The only downside to this place is the car park pricing, the lack of toilets nearby, the amount of tourism and the fact that it was flooded everywhere.”
