Newcastle-under-Lyme Ironmarket

Located in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

Independent Street brings its programme of festival events to Newcastle-under-Lyme's historic Ironmarket with two major dates in 2026: a Food and Drink Festival in July and a Jazz and Blues Festival in August. These events transform one of North Staffordshire's most characterful market spaces into a full day out — traders, producers, performers and visitors filling the Ironmarket with the kind of energy that reminds you what a great town centre event can do for a place.

The Food and Drink Festival brings together artisan food producers, local food traders and regional food and drink businesses for a celebration of independent food culture in the heart of the town. The Jazz and Blues Festival combines live music performances with a curated market of artisan goods and food traders — the kind of event where the atmosphere builds across the day and people find themselves still there when they'd planned to leave hours earlier.

Both events are free to attend. Check the Independent Street website for confirmed performer and trader details as each date approaches. With Trentham Gardens, the Potteries Museum and the Gladstone Pottery Museum all within easy reach, there's more than enough to build a full day around either event.

About this area

Newcastle-under-Lyme is a historic market town in North Staffordshire, located immediately to the west of Stoke-on-Trent and forming part of the wider Potteries conurbation. The town has a distinct identity from its more famous neighbour — quieter, more compact, with a medieval street plan centred on the Ironmarket and a university presence in Keele, whose remarkable 600-acre woodland campus lies just to the west of the town boundary.

The Ironmarket has been the commercial heart of Newcastle since the medieval period, and the town retains a genuine market tradition alongside the independent shops, cafés and restaurants that give the high street a more individual character than many similar-sized towns. Newcastle has been investing in its public realm and town centre events programme in recent years, with the Ironmarket increasingly used as a venue for markets, festivals and community events.

The surrounding area of North Staffordshire is rich in culture and landscape. Trentham Gardens — a spectacular restored estate with a mile-long lake, Italian gardens and a shopping village — is just three miles from the town centre. The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley houses the world's finest collection of Staffordshire ceramics. Stoke-on-Trent railway station provides national rail connections to London Euston, Manchester and beyond, and the M6 motorway is minutes from the town.
