About this area

Middleton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, roughly midway between Manchester and Rochdale on the River Irk — a position that gives the town its name. Granted a market charter in 1791, it grew rapidly through the Industrial Revolution as a centre of silk and cotton textile manufacture, and much of the town's built character still reflects this era of red-brick terraces and former mills. Architect Edgar Wood, a leading figure of the Arts and Crafts movement, designed more than sixty buildings in and around Middleton, several of which form the town's "Golden Cluster" of historic architecture around St Leonard's Church.

Middleton sits close to junction 19 of the M62 and junction 21 of the M60, with Mills Hill railway station a mile from the centre offering direct services to Manchester Victoria, Rochdale, Bolton and Leeds. Middleton Arena hosts touring live entertainment, and the town's Golden Cluster of listed buildings makes for a rewarding walk through its industrial and Arts and Crafts heritage.
