Bombed Out Church Makers Market

Presented by The Makers Market at Bombed Out Church Makers Market, Liverpool, Merseyside.

Bombed Out Church Makers Market takes place in the roofless ruins of St Luke's Church on Leece Street — one of Liverpool's most atmospheric and beloved public spaces. St Luke's was destroyed in the Liverpool Blitz of 1941 and left as a deliberate memorial to those who lost their lives, its shell now serving as an open-air gathering space, performance venue and community landmark in the heart of the city. A market in this setting carries a weight and significance that most venues simply cannot match.

Within the ruins and the surrounding churchyard you'll find local artisan makers selling handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, art, clothing, gifts and homeware alongside artisan food and drink traders — a strong mix of independent bakers, street food producers, speciality drinks and small-batch makers. Live music runs throughout the event, which in this setting takes on a particular resonance, filling the open walls with sound in a way that feels quietly extraordinary.

Free to attend and set in the very heart of Liverpool's Georgian Quarter, Bombed Out Church Makers Market is one of the most memorable events in the whole Makers Market calendar. The surrounding streets — Bold Street, Hope Street, Hardman Street — are among Liverpool's finest independent trading areas, making it easy to turn the market into a full day of independent Liverpool at its best.

One of Liverpool's most talked-about brunch destinations, tucked into Bold Street right beside the market. The menu spans fluffy pistachio pancakes, French toast with nutella and strawberries, and avocado classics — all with enormous portions and a halal-friendly option alongside. The cocktails are equally well regarded. Open seven days from 9am.

“Lovely ambience and good service, which made our visit okay. The pancakes were fluffy with great texture, but the crunchy element of my toppings didn’t do them justice and kept sticking to the teeth as I ate. The pulled lamb dish was also underwhelming, and we didn’t eat much of it. All in al...”

About this area

St Luke's Church — widely known as the Bombed Out Church — stands at the junction of Leece Street and Berry Street at the southern end of Liverpool city centre, in the heart of the Georgian Quarter. The church was built between 1811 and 1832 and destroyed by German incendiary bombs on 5th May 1941, during the most devastating night of the Liverpool Blitz. The decision to leave the ruins standing rather than demolish or rebuild them has given the site a permanent role as a memorial and meeting place.

The surrounding Georgian Quarter is one of Liverpool's most distinctive and rewarding neighbourhoods. Hope Street connects two great cathedrals — the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King and the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral — and the street between them is lined with cultural institutions, independent restaurants and bars that make it one of the finest cultural corridors in any British city. Bold Street, running downhill from the churchyard, is Liverpool's most celebrated independent shopping and eating street.

The area is within walking distance of Liverpool Lime Street station and is served by multiple bus routes through the city centre. The wider Georgian Quarter connects to the Ropewalks area, the Baltic Triangle creative quarter and Liverpool's waterfront, all of which reward extended exploration as part of a full Liverpool day.
