About this area
Hoylake is a seaside town at the north-western tip of the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, where the River Dee meets the Irish Sea. Originally a fishing and farming settlement recorded as Hoose, it grew into a Victorian holiday resort as transport links improved, and later into the largely residential, still well-preserved town seen today. It's best known as the home of Royal Liverpool Golf Club, founded in 1869 and one of the oldest links courses in England, which has hosted The Open Championship thirteen times, most recently in 2023.
Hoylake railway station connects to Liverpool and Chester, with a wide sandy beach, sand-yachting and a lively Market Street of independent restaurants and cafes rounding out the town's appeal. Neighbouring West Kirby, with its own marine lake and lifeboat station, is a short walk or drive away, making this a popular part of the Wirral to combine market browsing with a proper seaside day out.
