About this area

Ellesmere Port is a town on the Wirral Peninsula in Cheshire West and Chester, founded at the junction of the Manchester Ship Canal and the Shropshire Union Canal — a link originally engineered by Thomas Telford as part of an ambitious, ultimately unrealised plan to connect the Severn, Mersey and Dee. That canal heritage is preserved today at the National Waterways Museum, housed at the town's historic docks. The town's economy has long been anchored by heavy industry, including the Stanlow oil refinery and the Vauxhall Motors car plant, though retail and leisure — led by the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, the UK's first and largest outlet village — have reshaped the local economy since the 1990s.

Ellesmere Port railway station connects to Chester and Liverpool via Merseyrail's Wirral Line, and the M53 provides fast road access to the wider Wirral and Liverpool. The Blue Planet Aquarium, next to Cheshire Oaks, is one of the region's most-visited family attractions, while historic Chester and the wider Cheshire countryside are both a short drive away.
